Planning a trip to Italy? Unless you're lucky enough to have family, you'll have to find accomodations. This series of articles focuses on Florence budget hotels but often includes Florence bed and breakfast accomodations. On the way we describe multiple tourist attractions in the neighborhood. Each article includes beautiful photos reviewed budget hotels or bed and breakfast accomodations. Each hotel mentioned has a live link (we test them just prior to posting) to its English-language website. Keep coming back, we are adding new destinations all the time. Let's find a Santa Maria Novella, Florence budget hotel.
Florence's main railway station (Stazione Centrale) is often called the Stazione Santa Maria Novella after a nearby Fourteenth and Fifteenth Century Church by that name on the Piazza Santa Maria Novella. Very close by is the Via dei Tornabuoni, Florence’s finest shopping street and believe me, there’s a lot of competition in this lovely city. As always we have checked that all web sites are available in English.
The Alessandra Hotel.
The Alessandra Hotel is located only a block from the Ponte Vecchio and is also quite close to the Via dei Tornabuoni. But if you are looking for a different sort of shopping experience you will want to visit the the "Straw Market", known as "Il Porcellino" (The Little Pig) where local artisans display their wares including fine leather. The Alessandra is on the second floor of a palace built in the early Sixteenth Century. There is a continental breakfast. The hotel has 26 rooms, one suite, and one apartment. Not all rooms have a private bath. The hotel address is Borgo Santi Apostoli 17, Santa Maria Novella. The Alessandra Hotel website is www.hotelalessandra.com
The Hotel Nuova Italia.
The Hotel Nuova Italia is a family-run hotel near the train station and the Mercato Centrale (Central Market). Some of its 20 rooms can sleep four or more. They have a dining room and a bar. The hotel address is Via Faenza 26, Santa Maria Novella. The Hotel Nuova Italia website is www.hotel-nuovaitalia.com If you forget the hypen you’ll reach a hotel in the Piedmont region of Italy. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
The Hotel Torre Guelfa.
Step into the distant past at the Torre Guelfa Hotel which is located in a Palace Tower built entirely from stone in the Thirteenth Century. You might want to sip some fine Tuscany wine from the panoramic terrace and enjoy the spectacular view. There are 24 rooms some of which are triple and two suites. Unlike many of the other hotels they do not offer Internet in the rooms. The hotel address is Borgo Santi Apostoli 8, Santa Maria Novella. The Hotel Torre Guelfa website is hoteltorreguelfa.com
And wherever you go and whatever you do, check out the fine Tuscany or other Italian wines.Levi Reiss has authored or co-authored ten books on computers and the Internet, but to be honest, he would rather just drink fine Italian or other wine, accompanied by the right foods. He teaches classes in computers at an Ontario French-language community college. Visit his website www.travelitalytravel.com devoted to Italian travel with an accent on fine Italian wine and food. Visit his central wine website www.theworldwidewine.com with weekly reviews of $10 wine and columns devoted to various aspects of wine including wine and food, humor, trivia, organic and kosher wine and lots more.
