What a sight
The historic center of Siena, Tuscany is classed as a World Heritage Site. It is definitely and one of the most popular Italian tourist destinations. The Duomo is among Italy's finest Gothic cathedrals. The main façade was completed in 1380. This magnificent edifice contains the oldest stained glass windows in Italy. You may feel guilty to step on its inlaid-marble floors that took more than 40 artists over 200 years to complete. Don’t miss the Cripta (Crypt) which was recently rediscovered after an estimated seven centuries. Among the other sights to see are the Battistero (Baptistery), the Museo dell’Opera Metropolitana, Pinacoteca Nazionale, and the Spedale de Santa Maria della Scala, a fine group of museums. Hotel Duomo
The three-star Hotel Duomo is located on one of the oldest streets in this old, old city. It has 20 rooms ranging from singles to quads. Some of the rooms offer a view of the Cathedral and surrounding hills. The breakfast room has retained the wooden beams and brick floors of the original, Eighteenth Century building. Grand Hotel Continental
The Grand Hotel Continental is housed in a Seventeenth Century palace built by a Pope for his niece on the occasion of her wedding to a nobleman. The website’s Golden Book lists some of their famous guests, most of whom I have never heard of. On the other hand their restaurant sounds great and the wine list is clearly first class. The hotel includes a conference room, a congress room, and facilities for the disabled. You should visit their website to get an idea of what true luxury can be.
