The Duomo (Cathedral) area is the center of Milan in more ways than one. The Late-Gothic Cathedral itself was commissioned in 1386 and is the fourth largest church in the world. Don’t miss this spectacular church and don’t miss the neighboring Museo del Duomo. Right nearby is the Castello Sforzesco with its great museums. If the Sala delle Asse hall isn’t closed for restoration make sure to see Michelangelo’s final, unfinished sculpture, Rondanini Pietà. The Castle is surrounded by the beautiful Sempione Park. Milan is the fashion capital of Italy and fancy, fancy shopping streets abound in this neighborhood. For a fine window-shopping experience, tour the late-Nineteenth Century glass topped Vittorio Emanuele Arcade. Other neighborhood attractions include the Civic Arena, the Arco della Pace Gate, the Columns of San Lorenzo (Milan’s only monument dating to Ancient Rome), and the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie whose refectory boasts Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper.
